A Sebi crackdown on FPIs that haven't submitted the names of beneficial owners to custodians as per an April 10, 2018 circular has left assets worth some $5 billion blocked in Indian markets. The FPIs barred from making fresh investments in Indian market (but allowed to sell holdings) include several top names, including Pimco. Sebi has asked custodians to share the list of the non-compliant FPIs with stock exchanges and told brokers not to execute trades on their behalf. The circular last year asked FPIs to identify the beneficial owner of a fund based on not just ownership but control as well. About 10% of the FPIs have not complied.
