When the market was tumbling and lenders were selling pledged shares, promoters of several companies saw it as an opportunity to increase stakes in their own companies at lower prices. Since January 1, promoters of nearly 150 midcap and smallcap companies have increased stakes by either buying from the open market or through buybacks and preferential issues. Meanwhile, top foreign portfolio investors in India have been expanding their equity holdings, as smaller offshore funds trim their exposure to the country. Assets under custody of India's top 10 FPIs have increased by Rs 23,000 crore to Rs 3 lakh crore so far this financial year.
