Till around 2015, Indian banks mostly preferred to look the other way even as bad debts kept piling up on their books. After 2015, they were forced by RBI to recognise, write off and recover. Tuesday's SC order striking down the RBI circular on bad loans is a setback to that process. The ball is now in the lenders' court to proactively manage, identify and deal with such stress. In the changed banking environment, those who fail to protect public money are bound to get punished by investors and depositors alike.
